Spindle is an online literary magazine with a twist, featuring creative non-fiction, poetry and short fiction by, for and about New Yorkers -- literal and spiritual. Showcasing emerging writers, artists, musicians and other notable New Yorkers, it offers a multi-faceted look at New York City and the world beyond through the eyes of both those who love it and hate it, and in many cases, a peek inside the minds of the people themselves.

Like New York City, Spindle is best experienced with an open mind and a healthy dose of intellectual curiosity. There are no tour guides here, so readers are encouraged to take their time and casually explore the site, whether a section at a time, via the "related article" links, or by doing a keyword search.

Spindle Magazine is an online literary magazine with a twist, featuring creative non-fiction, poetry and short fiction by, for and about New Yorkers -- literal and spiritual. Showcasing emerging writers, artists, musicians and other notable New Yorkers, it offers a multi-faceted look at New York City and the world beyond through the eyes of both those who love it and hate it, and in many cases, a peek inside the minds of the people themselves.

Report your response times at Duotrope's DigestWe accept and review submissions on a rolling basis, with a 3-5 week time frame for acceptance or rejection. Thematic calls for submissions will be posted separately.

We expect all submissions and queries to be compliant with our guidelines and edited for typos, and strongly encourage prospective contributors to read some of the work we've published before submitting.

NOTE: Except for editorial and columnist candidates, please do NOT include resumés or references with your submissions; we won't read them. Trust your work to speak for itself!  DO, however, include a brief, two-sentence bio including a reference to your connection to New York City.

Columnists

Columnists: Have a distinctive voice and a unique take on NYC? Have the time to blog 500-1,000 words on a bi-weekly or monthly basis for at least 6 months? Submit brief query letter describing area(s) of focus -- topic, borough or hybrid --  with 3 sample essays.

Email query letters with appropriate category and full name in subject line; ie: "Editorial Query: [Your Name]".

Contributors

Poetry: Any style; max 65 lines. Simultaneous and previously published submissions accepted with notification. Submit up to 3 poems (max) for consideration.

Micro-Fiction: Any style; max 1,000 words. (Be sure to read Camille Renshaw's The Essentials of Micro-Fiction if you're not familiar with the form.)  Simultaneous and previously published submissions accepted. Submit 1 complete story or, for serialized stories, a brief query letter with writing sample for consideration.

Non-fiction: First-person perspectives, op-eds, compelling interviews, profiles and relevant reviews; max 1,000 words. Simultaneous and previously published submissions accepted with notification. Submit 1 complete article for consideration, or brief query letter indicating topics/interviewees of interest and your intended angle.

Photography/Visual Art: B/W or color; JPG or PNG; minimum width: 600 pixels. Simultaneous and previously published submissions accepted. Submit up to 5 photos for consideration, ZIPped.

Comic Strips: Serialized or editorial. Simultaneous and previously published submissions accepted. Send brief query letter with PDF samples.

Email submissions / query letters with appropriate category and full name in subject line; ie: "Poetry Submission: [Your Name]". Submissions may be sent within body of email, or as .rtf or .doc files.

Rights:

Upon acceptance, Spindle licences (not acquires) non-exclusive electronic publication rights only. All accepted work will be archived on the site in perpetuity, unless removal is requested, in writing, by the author no sooner than six months after date of initial publication.
